How to target longtail keywords for traffic and get thousands more people visiting your site for free from the search engines.

The new way of looking at targeting keywords and keyword phrases is called “longtail” - simply put, rather than targeting a 2 or 3 word keyphrase you target 6, 7, 8 or more words. These are the less searched for phrases but generally, when people search for more words they are being extremely specific in what they are searching for.

By being specific the searcher knows what they are looking for - specifically. They are not simply looking for information on the terms keyed in (as with a 2 word phrase) but want some information now on their chosen search terms.

By targeting these, your conversions should be higher. These work very well with specific products when the entire product is keyed in including the brand name and the product codes or descriptions.

You may only be targeting 10 or 20 searches per day but these terms are a lot easier to rank for because generally people aren’t targeting them. Most people (for some reason) go for the really hard 2 word terms which have a ton of competition and are therefore a lot harder to rank for.

Throughout this blog I always say target 50 terms that bring in 10 visitors a day rather than one term that brings in 500 a day. It’s far easier and your conversions will be higher.

So how do you go about targeting longtail keywords for your web site?

One of the best is to have a look at your weblogs from your website. Most hosting packages supply weblogs so go and check them. You’ll probably find a load of phrases you didn’t even think of that people have typed into the search engines and came to your site. If you are using a program such as google analytics you’ll also see your conversions - they are probably much higher.

So all you need do is to make specific pages for all the terms you have discovered - wait a while to be spidered and see the results. Chances are that you are ranking at the top almost immediately.

Simply take your 2 or 3 word keyword phrase you are targeting and key it into one of the tools online. They delved deeper into the results. Spend time looking around because you’ll be able to combine some of the longtail results into your pages. Don’t be put off with 10 searches a day because you will rank for these terms with ease.
