what is google pagerank

Google pagerank (pr) has been going for years and is a score between grey/ 0 and 10 that they give to each web page on the internet.

It used to play a big part in the ranking of webpages but these days the power is diminished - however, it gives a fairly accurate picture of what each page is “worth” - although of course the numbers can be manipulated if you know how!

What is the page rank scale?

Google’s pr system pr system has a numeric score between 0 and 10. However it also has a “greyed out” bar also. You will get the grey if a) you have a new website and it hasn’t been indexed yet or b) if your site has been banned by Google. When you are first ranked you will be give a 0.

How is page rank calculated ?

Mainly pr is calculated through the number and value of links into the page you are looking at. However pr is not a linear scale (more logorithmic) so a site with a pr 2 might be worth twice a pr 1 but a pr7 is worth much more than 7 times a pr1. In general, you need fewer links from pr6 sites for your site to be a pr5 than from pr1 sites (like, 1000s less) but google is changing so you need to get links from “on topic sites” and “content rich pages” and “not signature links” and not “links under the friends section” etc etc (you get what I mean here)

How can I see it?

You can see your own pr if you download the google toolbar - there are also tools that show you what your pr is on all the different google datacenters when times are achanging.

When is it updated?

For ranking purposes the Google pagerank is effectively completely up to date for Google purposes. Whatever the weighting page rank plays in the ranking of a page is always up to date - in Google’s eyes. What they won’t show you is what this score is on a daily basis.

Google will update the page rank scores every 3 or 4 months. There is no strict time table but it tends to be one per quarter.  Then you will see the new rank on your google tool bar.
