site wide external links
Everyone knows at present that the best way to get your site up the rankings is to get links from other sites into your own site.
MSN for example just seems to love fresh links. That means links added recently.
One school of thought was that a site wide link only carried the effective weight of one link so rather than getting the power of 1,000s of links from the 1,000s of pages your link is on that you would only get the power of 1 link.
For MSN I have tested this and site wides do gain more credit than one link. Additionally, if you get a sitewide link from a blog or forum, because forums and blogs get updated on a regular basis, you’ll continue to get more links to your website as the external site progresses.
So my tips for site wide external links are:
- get on topic links still - ie: don’t get a link from a webhosting site if your site is about pets
- don’t go for broke - ie: don’t think that suddenly 100,000 links is not going to raise a red flag - go for links in the hundreds only for a starter package
- get several site wide links to mix up your anchor text - ie: if all your anchor text into your site is the same, this will also raise a red flag with the search engines because it is just not natural enough
- get links on a site that you will actually get clickthroughs for - that is the goal of general internet marketing is to think of your external links as advertising and not just for SEO purposes
You can generally get links by paying for them - go on the major forums like digitalpoint and see what is being offered. Think of this as a longer term exercise and don’t think that by adding tons of links today is going to set you up forever.
Site wide external links do help but think about why you are doing this first.
