The google uk results are in massive flux at the moment.

Ever since the big daddy infrastructure during the earlier parts of 2006, google seems to have had a “data push” towards to end of each month. Normally the 27th of each month. On the various forums many people have noticed a big change which goes on either for a few days then everything is back to normal or a few months.

The last data push was September 29th or around that time and the google uk results are all over the place. If you rank number 1 for “results from the web” button then click on “results from the UK” you may be completely missing.

The reverse is also true.

Sites are just disappearing from SERPS for either several big terms or for everything.

No word from Matt Cutts or anyone else at google which is quite typical. Sometimes google tests things and thinks they are OK because they have tested them on the big industries like travel and finance - but when they roll them out 1,000s of other industries get hit because they are not so geared up for spammers.

Although the average user probably doesn’t notice all this, I am certainly hearing more from regular users such as “I searched for xyz yesterday on google but today it’s not there and I can’t remember the name of the company”

Because of this massive flux in the google uk results you’ll likely hear more of the above. Before google just did a big update once per year and the rest of the year the results were nice and stable apart from minor tweaks.

So what can a webmaster do about this?

Well it’s easy to say nothing because I guess your sales are going down. But wait some days, monitor some of the forums like webmasterword and track what is happening. My best guess is google doesn’t really know because the question on the UK results was asked to Matt Cutts once and he just said that the UK results were served up in much the same way as normal results.
