If you don’t want to undertake search engine optimization yourself you can always get an seo company to do the work for you. In general they will take your website and do the following main activities:
- research keywords
- optimize your page headers
- optimize your linking structure
- optimize your content
- get links into your site
But how do you choose an optimization company.
One way is simply to type “seo” or “search engine optimization” into google and see who pops up. I say this because if someone can get to the top of these terms they have a great handle on what to do.
The trouble is with google at present is they put a lot of weight on the age of the domain. So many of these companies have been around for years, but it is a good benchmark.
One thing not to do is answer any spam emails you receive that promise to get you to #1 in google in a couple of weeks. Additionally do not answer any telemarketing calls either.
Good seo companies do not need to advertise their services and it is best if you employ a company that is recommended to you. Good seo companies are very expensive. I mean very expensive like a minimum fee of $3-5000 just to get started or $500 per hour for consulting.
If you are very serious about your business then this should be a no brainer. If you want to succeed on the free listing side this is a good place to start.
So just be careful. Go to some of the seo forums and ask for recommendations (don’t talk to people who say they can do it for you - what you want is recommendations not people asking for your business).
If you do find a company you like ask for at least 4 or 5 sites they have optimized and ask what keywords they have optimized the site for. Check to see how many searches are undertaken on they keywords per month. They should have at least 50,000 searches - low volume searches are easy to optimize for (because no one is targeting them!)
